The Block Tackle

The most fundamental tackle is the block tackle. Of all the types of tackling in soccer, the block tackle should be the first one taught. If a player can not tackle properly, they are left relying on intercepting passes, something that can be very difficult if playing against players with excellent dribbling and/or passing skills.

The block tackle starts by planting the non-tackling foot firmly on the ground to provide a firm anchor. The inside of the foot is used for tackling, not the toe, and it's important to put the full weight of the body behind the football, and to get the head down over the ball.

If a player uses their toe to block tackle, one of two things is going to happen. Either they will injury themselves by bending their toes and ankles back or they will injury the other playing by "spearing" them, which can result in a foul being called.

As with any tackling skill, timing is crucial. Try to tackle when your opponent is off balance, or lets the football go too far in front of him. This is often called "showing too much of the ball". Another good time to tackle is when your opponent looks down at the ball.

This is one of the first skill sets I work with in pre-season. Because I want my players to be able to win the ball back quickly and I want them to do it in a safe and proper manner.
